My father, a Scotsman, my mother, a Uruguayan and I, a travelling fruit picker. But my greatest passion has always been sewing and printing. I started sewing and dying fabric as a child; I made clothes for me and my friends. At age 17 a friend taught me how to block print using a potato cut in half with a shape cut into it.
As a backpacking fruit picker I did a lot of hand sewing but was sometimes seen wondering the streets of El Puente with an old hand working sewing machine doing repairs on the side of the road. It was by doing the repairs that I learn't a lot about clothes.
It was not until many years later that I started sewing clothes and printing fabric for my livelyhood at the markets in Nelson, New Zealand where I settled down and had my daughter, Polly (Now 15ish). For a number of years I gathered new skills and experience. I was quite inspired by the people I met and what was going on around me.
I started Sidekick in 2003, making trousers for an independant clothing shop in Penzance. I developed those skills and started pattern cutting and expanding ever so slowly over the years. Later I moved to Penryn as good fortune brought me to the studio I currently occupy. I am very interested in 50's print, the colours, tones, the shapes of the designs really inspire me. I get a lot of inspiration from nature and frequently go sketching. |
